Dobsonian telescopes are popular because they are simple, stable, and offer excellent views for their price. But most Dobsonians are fully manual: they do not know where they are pointing, and they cannot automatically move to a selected object.
That means finding a galaxy, nebula, or star cluster can sometimes take longer than observing it.
The Traditional Approach: Star Hopping
The usual way to find objects with a Dobsonian is called star hopping.
You begin with a bright star, compare the surrounding patterns with a chart, and move from one group of stars to the next until you reach the target. It is a useful skill and a rewarding way to learn the night sky.
However, star hopping can become difficult when:
- Light pollution hides the reference stars
- The target is far from a bright landmark
- The telescope view does not match the chart orientation
- You are unfamiliar with the area of the sky
- You want to find several objects in a limited session

How AstroHelm Works
AstroHelm uses your phone’s camera and plate solving to determine exactly where your telescope is pointing. It does not require any additional hardware beyond a mount to attach the phone to the telescope.
Plate solving works by identifying patterns of stars in the camera image and matching them against a star catalog. Once AstroHelm recognizes the field, it can calculate the telescope’s position and show you how to move toward your selected target.
You do not need to identify individual stars or estimate how many eyepiece fields to move. AstroHelm handles the navigation for you.
Finding an Object with AstroHelm
The basic process is simple:
- Attach your phone securely to the telescope.
- Open AstroHelm and select the object you want to observe.
- Point the telescope approximately toward the correct part of the sky.
- Let AstroHelm determine the telescope’s current position.
- Follow the on-screen guidance as you move the telescope.
Because a Dobsonian is still moved manually, you retain the direct, hands-on experience of using the telescope. AstroHelm simply tells you where to move.
No Motors or Encoders Required
Traditional computerized telescope systems may require motorized mounts, digital encoders, alignment routines, cables, and dedicated controllers.

Useful Under Light-Polluted Skies
